Should my 6-month-old cat's fresh scratch get stitches or home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 26 days old | 5 lbs

Hello, I would like to ask if we should visit a vet for stitches, my cat probably scratched himself while we were playing, because its very fresh, i discovered it immediately, and Im worried. Please answer, what should we do? If its not very serious can we do at home treatment? Hes 6months old, indoor cat, completely healthy, last check up was two weeks ago. Thank you, Kristina

Hi ! It is a very neat wound, so if you clean it with some saline (flush it with a syringe and some saline solution that yo can busy from the chemist) for the first couple of days and it should heal on his own without stitches in the next week or so. You will need to keep an eye on it and check it every day to make sure it is getting better and healing. If the wound starts to ooze, or swell, then it might mean that it is infected and needs to have antibiotics. Hope this helps !
