Why won't my senior cat eat their food but only wants human meat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 years old | 5 lbs

My cat always have food that they have always enjoyed but as they have gotten older they have just stopped really eating. They have been practically deteriorating and starving themselves. Very occasionally if there is meat being prepared they will try to get it and eat it like they haven’t have food in days. What could be wrong?

Your cats very likely have gingivitis., or bad teeth or ulcers or injuries in their mouth and will need to be examined by a veterinarian. Please make an appointment tomorrow. They probably are in pain trying to eat. Try offering canned food pate style until they can be seen by a vet.
