Why is my sick senior cat not eating while on prescribed antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

My 13 year old cat went to the vet on Dec 21 because he could not walk, stand, or use his right side. The vet thinks it's either a very bad infection or a tumor/cancer (we'd need an MRI, but we can't afford it). He has been on Clavamox since the night of the 21st, and on Pradofloxacin for two days now. He hasn't wanted to eat since three days ago, but we've been giving him water and forcing a tiny bit of food in his mouth, so he eats SOMETHING. Could the lack of appetite be due to antibiotics?

I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
