Why does my guinea pig bite me when I pick him up or hold him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 1lb

So I’ve had my guniea pigs for a month now I’d say that Bueno is settled in as he will sniff my hand and let me stroke him in the cage and he lets me give him food by hand but I’ve started to notice that when you pick him up he “bites” so earlier today I put him up and put him chest he was fine happy to be stroked and then bit my shirt like he was annoyed so I thought he may need a pee so put him down and he didn’t so I’m wondering if it’s normal it happens only when I’m he’s being held

This sounds normal. He is just not used to being picked up/held. You have to train him to accept this handling. Currently he is training you that when he bites you put him down and he gets his way. Here is a link to an article that may help you. Hope this helps. Best wishes. ( http://www.cavyspirit.com/biting.htm )
