My dog's eye is swollen and not improving. Should I see an eye vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

My dog's eye swelled up one morning after playing in the yard. I brought her to the vet who looked in her eye, found no foreign objects, cornea looked fine and gave me steroid/antibiotic drops. I used them for a week, it cleared up, but a few days later, her eye was swelled again. The vet looked at it again, said everything was OK, gave me prednisone drops. It is not improving. What could be the problem? Vet mentioned sedation for a closer look, but do I need a vet opthomalogist at this point?

That looks like chemosis - swelling of the conjunctiva. The underlying cause, I don't know. All the things I can think of that can cause chemosis should easily resolve with topical steroids. Since it is not resolving, then yes, I think a consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist would be necessary at this point. Best wishes.
