Is it normal for vets to shave a dog's infected lump before removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 93 lbs

My 5 year old American bully had a large gumball size lump on her back which looked like it was infected. I brought her to the vet and they stated it was a cyst and they would remove it. Is it normal for a vet to use clippers to shave it off?

Yes, it's normal and necessary in order to have a better look at it and also to help it heal better without all the fur going into the infected area. it does need to be removed indeed, the sooner the better.
