My dog has an occasional cough and mucus in her throat. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 4 lbs

In better words, her cough is not persistent. She does not cough if she runs around the house or plays. She coughed 1 time today & I hade no idea what she was doing & it was just 1 cough no back to back coughing. Is that worrisome? Other times she’d cough is if she was eating or drinking too fast. Dr said she had the heart & lungs of a puppy but mucus in her throat. The cold went away but now I think it’s back& I will take her to the dr

I think it's a good idea to get Precious checked out again if the coughing is returning. Sometimes it's an infection and other times it persistent inflammation. The doctor may recommend a medication to break up mucus and/or decrease inflammation. Until you get her into the vet, make her drinking water tepid and avoid excessive activity that will cause her to bark a lot of pant. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
