Dog has blood/WBC in urine, sensitive stomach. Can I avoid antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 59 lbs

So my golden retriever has a very sensitive stomach most food other then purenia ha and and most antibiotics cause her an upset stomach flare. She is on slippery elm the last few weeks for her stomach. However in a routine check up and urine check the vet said she had some white blood cells and red blood cells but no bacteria they could see. Is there anything I can do to clear up the blood and white blood cells in urine other then antibiotics. I dont want to send her stomach into flare again.

If you are not seeing symptoms of frequent urination or straining to urinate, then you could always culture the urine to see if there is actually a urinary tract infection before you start antibiotics. You might also discuss a cranberry supplement with your veterinarian to help improve urinary tract health, however with very sensitive dogs, anything has the potential to throw off the balance in the GI tract. https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=21560
