My dog has hepatitis. Is it contagious to humans? Life expectancy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 7 y/o, 16 lb little dog has been diagnosed with Hepatitis. Is this contagious to humans? What is average life expectancy? She is on Denamarin Advanced chewable tab, 1/2 daily. Weight loss the only other recommendation. Any suggestions or information? Thank you.

No, a dog's hepatitis is not contagious to humans unless it is caused by leptospirosis. Without knowing exactly what kind of liver damage there is and which disease (hepatitis just means inflammation of the liver) is involved, there is no way to tell you the life expectancy and whether this is a terminal disease. The liver is very good at recuperating, so your vet can best answer this question. As for gaining weight, if you feed a good quality dog food, preferably hepatic diet your dog should be gaining weight again. If you want to cook for your dog, here is a good website: https://secure.balanceit.com/tools/ez2/index.php? or you can feed a special diet available from your veterinarian.
