My cat has chronic breathing issues. Is it time for euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My cat is 2 years old and has a rhinosinositis since he was born. Medication treatment was tried the first year without success. His vet told me he has chronic rhino and that it won't ever go away. It's getting far worse since a few weeks, he has a lot difficulties to breath, it seems to has gone now in its throat. I'm wondering if letting him live like that cause him a lot of pain. I love my cat, but I don't know if I should put an end to its pain or if he can keep living like this?

Chronic sinusitis can be permanent but there are many potential options to try to minimise and improve symptoms. Steam therapy, extended courses of antibiotics such as doxycycline, mucolytics to loosen the discharge and interferon can all help to improve progress but treatment is likely to be required for relapses. Euthanasia is a very valid option is such cases as the condition is very distressing when they are struggling to breathe in particular
