Why is my new parakeet making hissing, breathing, or squeaking sounds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

My brand new parakeet seems to be making unusual noises, to me of course. I'm a new bird owner and I just brought them home in the last 24 hours. I don't know if it's just because they are nervous, however they seem to be making an unusual hissing or breathing sound. Sometimes as this sounds happens it also has a squeak mixed in.

thanks for reaching out about Epsilon. Squeeks and hissing could be normal communication but also a possible respiratory disease. Providing heat suppert might help support them. If the problem persists, seek and appointment with a veterinarian. Good luck.
