My ferret has black, liquid stool. Should I take him to the vet?

I have a pet ferret named Bowser. This morning I noticed his stool was liquidy and very dark in color, it looked black. I recently changed his food a couple of weeks ago from pre-packaged diet to a loose bulk diet of the same food. Everything other than the stool has seemed normal. He's been eating/drinking, playful, no sign of physical discomfort. What does this mean and should I take him to the vet for a check up?

Very dark feces is always a quite concerning sign as it could be related to the presence of digested blood coming from the first tract of the gastrointestinal tract. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed.
