New kitten not eating after adoption. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 7 lbs

I recently adopted an older kitten a few days ago. She has not eaten much the past few days, nothing more than a spoonful of food. We adopted her 3 days ago, and she was only at the shelter 2 days before we adopted her. We are starting to get worried about her because we have seen that it can be life threatening. She still drinks water and purrs when we pet her, and shows some interest in food, but never eats it. What should we do?

I would recommend to take Willow to the veterinarian for an examine. Not eating is generally a sign of illness. The doctor will examine her and check her temperature and may recommend diagnostics. Get her in as soon as you can so she can get on the right tract and not get worse. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
