Should I take my puppy to vet? Kennel cough returned after prednisone.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 5 months and 22 days old | 48 lbs

My 6 month old Labradoodle was diagnosed with kennel cough on 12/15. We did a round of doxycycline and prednisone. He's been off the pred for 3 days now and he's coughed a few times today. He hadn't coughed since 12/18. Does he need to be seen by the vet again? Is he contagious? The cough popped up again after him not coughing for 12 days. I wonder if it's because he's off the prednisone now? Thank you!

It's possible that the inflammation in the airways just has not completely resolved, and the pred was helping to decrease that inflammation. If he's still eating and drinking, and he's active and happy, I wouldn't be too concerned yet. Give it another 5 days or so, if the cough is still persisting, followup with your vet. If his breathing is labored at all, or if he seems depressed or has a decreased appetite, please followup with your vet. As for being contagious, he may still be. I would wait at least another week before having him around other dogs.
