My senior dog is self-pleasuring. Is this normal? How do I handle it?

Boogie has just begun to self pleasure himself all the way to the big O. It has gotten gross because usually sitting beside me. Is this normal at age 9. I've started telling him ”no" but don't want to ruin his life. How to handle? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 years old | 12 lbs

This is unusual for his age but not impossible since he is still intact. If you don't want him to continue this behavior then I would tell him no and distract him with a toy or treat. Disciplining him for this isn't going to ruin his life . You could have him neutered but just know this may or may not fix the problem. If this continues, I would talk to your vet and make sure he doesn't have any health issues like a urinary tract infection. If everything is normal, your vet may try to put him on a anti-anxiety medicine to see if this helps. I hope this helps!
