When is the best age to neuter my dog for growth and joint health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spanish Water Dog | Male | neutered | 8 months and 8 days old | 42 lbs

I have been advised by several well meaning individuals that the ideal age for neutering a dog like mine is 2 years old as neutering before then can interfere with his growth & cause possible health issues like joint problems. So at what age should we have Bo’s procedure done?

There are vets who advocate neutering male dogs around two years of age, and that's fine. In female dogs, it's best to spay them before their first heat to lower the risk of developing mammary tumors, but there isn't that worry in male dogs. You can wait until Bo is two to have him neutered. Personally, I recommend around now, but it's your decision. I hope this helps.
