My older dog is sick. Are my puppies' runny noses contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a litter of 7 German shepherd puppies inside and an unrelated, 6mo old German Shepherd that lives outside. The 6mo old has had gunky eyes, thick yellow snot from his nose and trouble breathing for 2 weeks. The puppies are 2 weeks old and I just noticed that they have clear, slightly, runny, noses. Could they have caught what my other dog had and should I be concerned?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. What your 6 month old dog has could be contagious and could be very very dangerous to the puppies, keep them separate and make sure you are washing your hands and clothes between petting and interacting with the older dog and the puppies. If the puppies are breathing well and the discharge is clear they are likely ok, but if they start breathing heavy, are weak, not eating, or losing weight (weigh the puppies daily) then I would get them to a vet right away. Also, it sounds like your 6 month old is very very sick and needs to be seen by a vet right away. Best of luck with all your doggies!
