My dog has nipple bumps. Can I wait for removal & spay her at 8?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 4 months old | 46 lbs

I found a small, round bump under my female, unspayed dog's skin, next to her nipple. It's moveable and round. She has a larger, not round bump near another nipple. The vet suggested to surgically remove and have them biopsied. We're traveling over the next couple of weeks and she'll be under my partners son's care so I'd rather wait until February. Do you think this is something that should be done now? And is there any benefit to also getting her spayed at 8 years old?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Waiting until February should be fine, just have your partner's son check them every couple days to make sure they aren't growing, and don't feel hot/cold or are painful to Bennie. YES, spaying her now is still a good idea, it decreases her risks of some cancers and also eliminates her potential for getting the life-threatening condition called pyometra. She is also less likely to run away and either get hit by a car or get pregnant and have a litter as a geriatric dog which is more dangerous for her. Best of luck with Bennie!
