Why is my dog's skin spot getting worse after cleaning with peroxide?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 months old | 5 lbs

My dog got a little spot on his fur about a week ago, and I cleaned it. When i cleaned it some fur fell off. Now it looks like the spot is getting worse, and i clean it daily with peroxide and neosporine. I don’t know what to do. It doesn’t seem to bother him but I just want to know what to do about it.

Hello. This looks like a pretty significant little pyoderma going on. Loki may need a stronger medication than the Neosporin to treat this, & the peroxide can actually hinder healing if used too much. Switch to an antimicrobial skin cleaner like Hibiclens ( available at any pharmacy ) & stop using the peroxide. You can continue the Neosporin, but I would encourage you to see your vet in case another treatment is necessary. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
