My diabetic cat's blood sugar is dangerously low. Should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old

My cat is diabetic. His blood sugar was 70 this afternoon, he had had his regular dose of insulin in the morning. I fed him dinner, he ate. Checked his sugar again before the next dose of insulin was due at 9:30pm, his sugar was below 20. I quickly gave him some honey. He has perked up and 15 minutes after honey his sugar was up to 27. I gave more honey on his gums. My question is should I be bringing him in to the emergency vet tonight or can I wait and call the vet in the morning?

Take him to the emergency vet right now. This is serious hypoglycemia and it could kill him. He may be in remission and may not need any more insulin. However this needs to be checked by a veterinarian. But for now it is very important that he be seen at the ER.
