My dog yelped suddenly, leg retracted. Why can't he stand properly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old

My dog was out in the garden doing his business, when I heard a loud Yelp, I ran outside to get him to find his leg retracted and he couldn't stand properly. I assumed so,etching had bites him due to the Yelp but nothing. I'm confused as there is nothing that would have made him fall over or trip.

Poor Alfie! I see he's a toy breed dog, and they can be prone to a condition called a luxating patella. This is when the kneecap moves out of it's correct anatomical position, causing sudden lameness. It could also be that he strained a ligament or muscle. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
