My dog's eye is red and swollen after a dog bite. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 50 lbs

My dog’s eye is red and swollen. His eyes will often get red or pinkish , we believe from allergies, but they never seem to bother him. We are visiting family in a different state for the holidays, and a family dog bit him yesterday. We thought he had latched on to his neck, but are not sure if his eye could have been scratched as well. We don’t see any open cuts, so are not sure if this is from that, or just allergies. He has seemed a little lethargic today.

I'd have Arlo checked out by a local vet now. If there is a chance his eye was scratched, it has to be treated now, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Any eye problem should be examined asap. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
