My puppy had kennel cough. Can he be around a pup with pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 months and 19 days old | 29 lbs

I am visiting Florida, and staying with a friend of mine who has a 3 month old pup. I was just informed that his pup has pneumonia and is halfway through his medication. My puppy is 5 months and had kennel cough, but no longer does. Is it safe to bring him around his pup? Can I just separate them in different rooms? Thanks so much!

Hello. Has your pup had all his vaccinations? Even though we do not have a vaccine for pneumonia, the usual distemper vaccine usually contains a fraction to help prevent parainfluenza which may help. I think it would still be a good idea to try & keep the puppies apart during your visit. That means separate outdoor times, no nose to nose contact in the house & hands are washed after anyone handles either puppy. If the younger puppy is not coughing or sneezing, then once the medications are finished, they can play together. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
