My puppy is breathing fast but acting normal. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I’m taking care of a 10 month year old puppy and woke up to him breathing very quickly. It seems like his respiration rate is around 70 or 80. I let him outside and he seems to be acting normal but is still breathing very quickly. Should I bring him to an emergency vet center?

If there are no other signs and you are not suspecting any intoxication you could monitor him at this stage for the next 2 hours and see if he settles down. If not a check up would be ideal to understand the underlying cause and treat appropriately. Unfortunately at this stage the presentation is quite generic and differentials are many.

This is worrying enough that I'd recommend having him seen by a vet sometime soon. The biggest concern with fast breathing and a decrease in activity is that he potentially has a heart problem. There are also other diseases that affect the red blood cells and lungs that can cause these problems. Below is a link to a good article that explains how to correctly check the respiratory rate. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/home-breathing-rate-evaluation I hope that helps and all is well with Coco.

If you are concerned I recommend a full vet check as breathing issues can rapidly deteriorate. I would be concerned about chest or heart conditions, parasites or a fever and the treatment would depend on the findings of a full health check
