Why does my dog have a red bald spot and thinning hair on his chest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 21 lbs

My dog got a bald spot on his chest. I first noticed it a few days agao, and since then I think it has begun to thin a little, but has not gotten bigger. The skin appears to be redder than his normal pallor.

Poor guy. I suspect this may be a demodexx mite issue. Demodexx mites live on every pets skin and are not contagious, but they can overpopulate in certain pets with a weakened immune system, causing hair loss, redness and sometimes secondary infection. I would have your vet test his skin to see if this is a mite problem. If so, it can be treated. Another possible cause is a contact dermatitis, but these areas are typically very itchy as well. Best wishes with your pet Shiro and I hope his skin clears up soon! Take care.
