Is a firm knot under my dog's spay incision normal after a week?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 24 days old | 35 lbs

My female dog was spayed a week ago and there is a knot under the skin where the incision is at. It just doesn't look normal to me. Thanks

Hi there! I'm not sure if you meant to attach a photo, but if so, it didn't come through. In general, I can tell you that it's fairly common to feel a firm knot under the skin along the length of the incision after a spay or other abdominal surgery - this is usually caused by a local inflammatory reaction to the suture material under the skin, and isn't normally cause for concern as long as there is no redness or discharge, and the pet is acting normal. However, if you're concerned, the best option would be to stop by your vet's office and have them take a look to make sure everything is okay :)

You may be feeling the sutures underneath the skin. It will be sensitive for about 10-14 days. Keep the e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Prevent excessive running, jumping or rough play. The incision looks good in the images. Monitor for swelling, redness/bruising and discharge or bleeding.
