Adopted parakeet: odd beak licking & crustiness. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 0.3 lbs

We recently adopted a grass parakeet from a pet store. Today, he is licking his beak oddly, but seemingly only when I'm around. He also has a small amount of crustiness on the underside of his lower beak. We were wondering if this is something serious?

It may be serious. It is difficult to say just based on your description. It could be a nutritional deficiency causing this crustiness but it could also be mites or any number of other things. You need to have a vet examine him in person to get a diagnosis and/or treatment plan. Best wishes.
