My dog reacted to flea meds and still itches. Can I use Advantage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 40 lbs

I travelled to my parents' place in a small town. Along the way I stopped at a friend's house, and my dog exhibited signs of having fleas as I was nearing my destination. All that was available locally was Sergeant's Flea & Tick, so without looking at reviews I applied that. He had a reaction, I followed the instructions to wash it off and now he still itches and chews his skin. I can find Advantage now, but is it too soon to apply it? What should I do?

Poor Brujo! I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes, and it's safe to use now. I'd wait at least one week before applying the Advantage. I hope this helps!
