My dog is scooting and bruised after neutering. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 15 days old

My dog got neutered a week ago and his scrotum region looks bruised. He also likes to scoot when we are out on walks and starts whining trying to pick himself.

Hello. Everything looks great. The scooting may be related to the healing process, or his anal glans are full & need to be expressed. Try & keep him from scooting too much until you can have him seen by your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

The incision looks very good for this amount of time. There is some bruising on his scrotum that should start to go away, so I would not worry at this point. He may be scooting and scratching because it itches and not due to pain. He may be laying down more due the e collar around his neck . It can scare them and make them not want to move a lot. After a week to 10 days he can have the e collar off, so you are almost there.
