Why is my social guinea pig suddenly not eating and skittish?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 23 days old | 2 lbs

Hi I have had my male guinea pig almost a year now, he’s always squeaking for his food and likes to run laps when he’s out and is very social with the whole family however today he didn’t eat his morning meal and hasn’t come out all day, so I got him out he will eat happily on my lap but was very skittish when I put him back away do you know if there could be a reason for this?

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. It sounds to me like something may have spooked George. Do you have any guests over for the holidays? Any changes in the household or with his cage? I don't think I would be overly worried about this just now. Just keep a close eye on him and if his behavior doesn't go back to normal in a couple days then maybe you should have your vet take a look at him just to rule out any underlying medical issues. Hope this helps. Happy holidays!
