My cat has a lump near his shoulder after booster shots. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 months and 21 days old | 5 lbs

Bean has formed a kind of lump behind his shoulder blade, somewhat close to his injection site of his booster shots. It’s not on his bones, but does not show on the skin. Is this normal? I foster cats and one has leukemia and another had just been euthanized for dry FIP. Just a little nervous

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Soft masses that are part of the skin can be either abscesses (pockets of infection), small bits of swelling from vaccine injections (these can last a few months sometimes), fatty masses, and less commonly in a 4 month old kitten, cancers. I would monitor it, if Bean is painful or if it is growing or changing get it looked at right away, otherwise just monitor for now and have it assessed by your vet next time you are in. Best of luck with Bean!
