How do I safely clean my cat's Henry pocket if it has ear wax buildup?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Can you clean a cat's Henry pocket? The Henry pocket or cutaneous marginal pouch is a fold of skin forming an open pouch on the lower posterior part of the external ear. The pocket is situated in the location occupied by the antitragus in the human ear. My cat seems to build up what looks like dried ear wax in this pouch or pocket. Is there a safe way to clean that "wax" out?

I suggest you take your cat to a veterinarian for an exam and cleaning of the Henry's pocket by the vet if necessary. Your vet can show you how it is done provided it is necessary at all. It is not normal for this pocket to collect dirt.
