Why is my dog licking a dry spot on her skin and what can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Standard Schnauzer | Female | unspayed | 14 lbs

Hi! I noticed that since yesterday, it's dry. She is a schnauzer, 4 years old. The only vet that can see her is available on Wednesday.

This is obviously a lesion that is bothering your dog and therefore Dixie is licking it. This could be due to joint pain or itchy skin (allergy, bacterial or fungal infection or a skin tumor.). You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching. Until you can take Dixie to the vet on Wednesday, you should put an e-collar on her so she cannot lick the area that is bothering her.
