Why is my dog still bleeding and swollen weeks after her heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 21 days old | 73 lbs

My 9 mo German Shepherd went about 2 was with a bloody discharge, but not much swelling before she went into full blown heat mode the day before Thanksgiving. She stopped the discharge about a week ago, but was still swollen. Yesterday I noticed she’s got the bloody discharge and is very swollen again. Is this normal because it’s been over 30 days not even counting the 2weeks before!

No, this is not normal. LuLu may have a uterine infection which can be life threatening. You need to have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Drinking and urinating more than usual and appearing quieter than usual would also be signs consistent with an infection. The veterinarian will give her a thorough exam, blood tests and possibly take an x-ray to visualize her uterus. Should LuLu get lethargic you need to take her to an emergency clinic.
