My dog has a deep eye ulcer with discharge. Is emergency care urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 17 years and 8 months old | 27 lbs

My dog has ulcer on his right eye according to the vet. He recommended taking him to eye specialist and prescribed him Gentamicin eye drop. He thinks it's deeper and it's not just the surface. With holiday season, the next available date is in January. or they'll take him as emergency visit. How urgent does he require eye specialist care? What will they do to treat him? He has a lot of white greenish discharge in his eye.

Any eye injury or infection should be treated as a veterinary emergency. If the ulcer is deep, there is a possibility Jackie could lose the eye. Out of an abundance of caution, an exam sooner rather than later would be recommended. This will prevent unnecessary pain and could prevent permanent damage. Also, the sooner treatment is started, the sooner he will begin to feel and look better. Treatment options may include topical antibiotics and debriding the cornea. In more severe cases, surgery may be required to protect the eye during healing.
