My dog's jaw won't open. Will steroids fix it or is it long-term?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bullmastiff | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 95 lbs

My dog is unable to open her mouth more than an inch. My vet has her on steroids for the inflamation. Will this be a long term condition, will we be looking at monthly treatments, or will her jaw ever be normal again?

If this is due to muscle inflammation this may take a month or more of treatment to get better and she may need to stay on a low dose of the steroid life long to prevent this from happening again. Usually they fully recover but can relapse without medication. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Cynder.
