My cat got agitated on Xanax. Is a higher dose safe for flying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Selkirk Rex | Male | neutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 11 lbs

Hey. We are taking a flight tomorrow with our two cats. One of our cats gets extremely agitated in the car, and we imagine its even worse on a plane. We got xanor(xanax) from our doctor and tried it out on our cat today. It was 0.25mg and the response was pretty much just the cat becoming drowsy and uncordinated for a while, then playful and "agressive" as in alot of playfighting and running around. Our vet recommended 0.75mg for the trip. Any thoughts on if increasing the dosage is a good idea?

It sounds like Bror may have had a paradoxical response after a bit that made him agitated rather than sedate. You could certainly try the full dose as prescribed but I would recommend trying it at home first. You could also let your vet know what happened and see what they would recommend- they might want to try a different sedative.
