My dog's ear/eye scab is worsening, won't stop scratching. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 13 days old | 12 lbs

My dog is a Cavapoo and she has a scab in between her ear and eyes. I took her to the vet and all they told me was to keep an eye on her. Next day, she got worse, and I freaked out because it looks so bad and she won’t stop scratching. I bought her a E collar and some itch cream and spray. Praying this will help alot. Any other recommendations?

You may want to give your vet a call and tell them it is getting worse. It sounds like this scab could be a hot spot or superficial bacterial infection. While stopping the itching sometimes helps an infection resolve (if that’s what this is) other times topical or oral antibiotics are needed. It’s a good idea to keep the e-collar on until the lesion is gone.

If shaking alone causes the scab to come off there may not be much else to do other than continue with the topical SSD cream prescribed by your vet. If Whit is scratching at all an e-collar might help. I would be a little concerned about infection based on your picture but it can be difficult to tell - if you've seen any new discharge or there is a foul smell you should let your vet know. If it doesn't seem to be improving in the next few days it would probably be best to touch base with your vet to see what they would recommend next.
