My dog is in pain, undiagnosed, and sent home. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 20 days old | 29 lbs

My pup started favoring his front rt leg, then the back left together. He wouldn't play and would lay sort of twisted up. Got very lethargic took to vet and he has elevated WBC and slight compression in neck area via xray. Kept overnight and put on iv fluids and antibiotics. No diagnosis and he is being sent home today. I'm not too comfortable bringing him back home if he continues to be in that much pain, and not know how to treat him. vet is over an hr away and this is our 3rd trip in 3 days.

You may ask the vet if there is a 24-hour care vet that could continue treatment. If this is truly a neurologic condition from an issue in the back or neck, it may or may not get better quickly. You may need to discuss surgical options with the vet. Also, discuss the pain medication and treatment protocol with your vet, and discuss who you can call if you experience any issues over the holiday. I am sorry Fred isn't feeling well. I hope this helps a little!
