Why is my dog constipated with dry, yellow stools on Ultamino?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 2 years and 5 months old | 31 lbs

My dog’s vet recommended Ultamino Dry food for his itchy skin and continuous scooting. He has been eating it for the past 2 weeks, but since he started with the new diet his stool has been small very dry and yellow, he seems constipated. He was taking Apoquel until yesterday, but he was still itchy and scooting for the past few days. I changed the food gradually and his stool was changing gradually as well. Is this normal?

Stool consistency can vary depending on the food. Ultamino is a low-residue food, so the stools may be smaller in volume. It shouldn't cause constipation, but you should call the vet to see if this is something that needs to be evaluated. If Fabio isn't allergic to fish oil, you could give him 1-2 capsules over his food once or twice a day to lubricate the stools a little. If he responded to the Apoquel, you may discuss using it long-term with your vet, or try Cytopoint monthly injections.
