My dog's nail split. What are the signs of a painful paw infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

What are signs of an infection in a dog? My sister's dog had a nail split, exposing the nerves, turned his nail black and he had severe pain but she couldn't afford to take him in. It's been approx 2 weeks and at first he just licked the one nail but has moved onto the licking the entire paw, he's started growling at it too, he makes a low whining noise when he exhales (similar to wheezing), and smacks his lips together like he has cottonmouth.

Swelling, pain/discomfort and itch, redness, discharge of the area involved are all possible signs. From what you described it may be possible that the nail bed is infected or there may even be a comminute fracture of the last phalanx. A check up is unfortunately needed to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
