My cat shoots poop outside the box. Is he too big or in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

my cat has had trouble pooping right outside the box his whole life though it has gotten much better, a stray poop happens with semi regularity the l. this morning, I got a first row seat to something tho: 1. Hes nearly as big/long as the box and its a Large box already. 2. He postured to Poop and his Butt was Not Lowered enough. Then the First Poo shot out of his butt like a cannon and landed a Foot Away! Rest of the Poo fell uneventfully, first one rocketed out! WHY on Earth...?

Ok, try this: Go to a big department store and buy one of those see through storage boxes (Sterilite or similar). Get a big one, and he then has enough room to poop inside it. He is 9 years old and may be having arthritis pain in the hips, and possibly cannot squat properly or won't because it hurts. This may also be the reason why it "shoots" out....he may delay pooping until he cannot hold it anymore and then go. You may want to schedule a vet exam with a feline veterinarian checking him for arthritis. If Mickey is painful, the feline vet may prescribe some off-license NSAIDs for your kitty which would significantly help with his pain.
