How long does dog kibble stay fresh in pantry, fridge, or sealed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

David, why would you put kibble in the fridge? Is it okay in the pantry in a sealed container for three months?

Hello. Dog kibble has organic compounds like fats, just like any other perishable food might have. Generally, if a kibble is not used within a month , it is a good idea to put the remainder in the fridge or freezer to prevent the breakdown & loss of essential vitamins & nutrients & rancidity of the fatty acids. As long as the original package seal is not broken, a food might remain relatively fresh for months, but once opened, it is good to try & use the entire contents within 4-6 weeks. Most manufacturers print a "best by" date on the bags of food. Storing the food in its original bag inside an airtight container in a cool, dry area will slow degradation and protect the food from vermin. You may end up spending more money (in the form of wasted or bad food) if you buy too much though.
