My dog has a mouth growth. Is it serious or can it wait for cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

Is there something that can be done this before I get her teeth cleaned? will that resolve it? It’s not bothering her & she’s having no problems but is it okay to leave it? (It feels like the rest of her lip. Google image provided for clearer picture) Until like February? Like is it nothing bad or serious that needs immediate attention? No other issues in mouth except a bit of tartar build up. Also, I’ve been brushing them with enzymatic toothpaste

Hello. It is always difficult to evaluate tissue abnormalities just based on a picture. This could be a benign tissue hyperplasia, or it may be more serious like the beginning of an oral carcinoma. If I understand correctly, you want to know if this can wait until February, but I really do not feel that is a good idea. I would have her mouth & gums evaluated now, & if your vet decides to wait until the teeth are cleaned ( which will be done under general anesthesia ), that might be a good time to get a biopsy. But please let your vet determine if it is OK to wait. There is just so much that can be missed with just a picture. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
