My dog ate brown powder from apartment wall. Is it poison?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 2 years and 5 months old | 31 lbs

Could this small bag with brown powder in the photo be some kind of rat or pest poison? it was near the wall on my apartment building and my dog opened it so he might have ingested a little. It doesn’t smell like anything. It has been an hour and he is acting normally, just sleeping now. Should I worry?

Hi there and thanks for posting! It is very hard to say what the contents of the bag may have contained just by the looks of it alone. You may want to ask your apartment manager if any rodent or pest control agents were used recently in your complex or if they might know what this powder may be. I would recommend continuing to monitor Fabio. If you are able to find out what it was, let us know and we will advise further on next steps. Otherwise, I would continue to monitor at home and take Fabio into see his veterinarian as soon as possible if you notice any unusual behaviors or signs of illness.
