Dog ear infection with yeast: Is amoxicillin the right treatment?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

Hi, My dog has a bad ear infection, with yeast in it. I want to know how much Amoxocillan to give to him to cure the infection. i currently have 250mg chewable tablets of Amoxocillan. He weighs about 80lbs and for how long should i keep him on it? thank you!

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic and not effective against yeast which is fungal. Contact your vets office to prescribe appropriate medications for him as well as a cleaner to remove as much debris as possible. Sedation may be required if painful

    Unfortunately this won't work. The ear has a poor blood supply, so topical medications are needed to treat an ear infection. In addition, antibiotics do not treat yeast or fungal infections. You will need to have Lucky sedated to have his ear examined and treated. If you have the money now, you can combine this exam with the neutering and rabies vaccine.

Ear infections are usually treated with an antibiotic ointment that is placed directly in the ear and left in the ear to work in between cleanings. A typical schedule of cleanings include cleaning out the affected ear every twelve hours, placing the ointment in the ear, massaging and letting it set. This continues for a period of 7-10 days to completely clear the infection. There are some OTC ear infection ointments available but it is likely you will need to visit your vet for a prescription version. Amoxicillin is a general antibiotic and is more common in other infections such as skin or minor internal infections. It is best to check with your vet to see if it is appropriate for your dog's type of ear infection rather than just giving it. Giving the wrong medication or wrong dosage for the problem can actually make it worse, or even make your dog very ill.

No Amoxicillin only treats bacterial infections. If you suspect that Bruno has a yeast infection, then I would encourage you to discuss this with your vet to see if an anti-fungal medication is also needed and can be prescribed.

I would recommend adding in a topical ear antibiotic medication as long as his ear drum is intact. Amoxicillin is typically only used if an inner ear infection is present and the ear drum has ruptured. Otherwise a topical Rx ear med is needed along with an ear cleaner (purchased from the vet or at your local pet store) to remove debris in between applications.

How do I get rid of a yeast ear infection?
Yeast ear infections often need antifungal topical ear medications to help resolution. Most topical ear medications will also contain an antibiotic (not always needed) and a steroid, which will help with the itch the yeast can cause. I would recommend that you discuss the proper medication with your veterinarian. Many times yeast ear infections are caused by too much moisture in the ear (like after swimming in a pool or lake) or from inflammation caused by allergies (from fleas, food, environment, etc.). If Tiki has recurrent yeast ear infections, you may need to have her vet work up allergies as the primary problem. For minor yeast ear infections that aren't red, swollen, or itchy, you can try an ear cleanser to help remove the yeast. If you do this for a couple days and it isn't better, than she will probably need prescription medications.

Hello, sorry to hear about Bailey. It would only potentially help if her ear infection was due to bacteria. However. infections can also be caused by yeast and may not be susceptible to antibiotics. Additionally, this medication should also not be used if its expired and should only be used as recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, ear infection are also treated with topical medications over oral medications to avoid the systemic side effects some antibiotics may have (nausea, decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea). You should have Bailey evaluated by your veterinarian today to determine what type if ear infection she has and ensure there is nothing within the ear canal itself that could be causing this infection (foreign material such as grass, plants or parasites such as ear mites). Unfortunately, it is illegal for the experts at Boop by Petco to give the dose information for any drug without seeing an animal in person first. In addition, oral antibiotics are not used to treat ear infections in dogs. A dog's ear has a poor blood supply, and the concentrations in the blood will not be enough to treat the infection. Finally, an ear infection in a dog can also be caused by ear mites and yeast, not just bacteria, so antibiotics may not be the correct treatment for it. You will have to take Spike into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can confirm he does have an ear infection, diagnose what is causing the infection, and can prescribe medication to treat it. Any ear infection would be examined and treated promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

How many days should I adminster injectable penicillin g procaine to my dog for an ear infection?
Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. The most important aspect of treating an ear infection is applying the appropriate medication (determined based on ear cytology, or looking at a sample of ear discharge on a microscope slide) directly into the ear canal as a topical treatment to the infection. Sometimes, particularly if the eardrum is ruptured, a dog may be put on an oral course of antibiotics and/or antifungals (depending on the type of infection), but penicillin would not be a usual antibiotic choice as it is unlikely to address the more common causes of ear infections. Therefore, injectable penicillin is not a typical component of treating an ear infection. I recommend you have Aerial seen by your primary veterinarian, and they can help guide you on an appropriate treatment of the infection; injectable antibiotics should never be used without the guidance of a veterinarian.

Peroxide should not be used to clean ears since it can sting. Water in a dark, warm ear canal can promote bacterial and/or fungal growth, so it shouldn't be used either. Apple cider vinegar likely won't resolve infection if that's what she has. You may need an antibiotic or antifungal. Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. A swab of the ear can be examined under a microscope to diagnose the type of infection. Afterwards, your vet can dispense the appropriate medication. You can use an ear cleaner, such as Epi-Otic, to clean her ears.

Hello. Otomax is a broad spectrum medication the contains an antibiotic, antifungal as well as a steroid. It is possible that the steroid is preventing the lesion from healing. I would talk to your vet about this & switching to another antibiotic such as silver sulfadiazine. If it still does not heal, the lesion may need to be cultured or biopsied to identify why it is not healing. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
