Why is my dog straining to poop and has back pain after shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 5 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

So my dog had a vet appointment on Wednesday for a annual check up and shots. Since then she has had little harder time pooping then normal, she’s pushing a lot and at first the poop was firm but now it’s seems like a normal consistency. The part I’m worried about it’s when I got home yesterday and I was greeting her and giving her pets on her lower back she kind of yipped. She has been a little hesitant to walk up stairs and jump up on furniture. Can a dog strain a muscle from pooping?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jezz. She could be tender from her vaccine injection site depending on where the shots were given. I would contact her veterinarian today to see of this is a possibility. Otherwise there could be another problem such as lower back pain. This is common in small breed dogs. It is unlikely related to her straining to defecate. I would ask her veterinarian today. I hope this information helps!
