Why are my dog's hind legs suddenly weak, lethargic, belly swollen?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 35 lbs

My dog had sudden onset of paresis. He seems to have severe weakness in his hind legs and it feels like his has some swelling in his abdomen. He was fine last night but this morning he seemed to be having pain or weakness in his hind legs but not enough to cause concern. This afternoon now he can barely move but his front legs are completely fine. He has very little appetite and seems a little lethargic compared to what he normally is.

This is a medical emergency, and Chance needs to see a vet now. It could be he has a ruptured disc in his back causing the sudden paralysis. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.
