Will my dog get enough nutrients if I cut her food for weight loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

If a dogs food is reduced to much will she not get enough nutrients to be healthy? For example my cavalier is on royal canin weight care and she is getting 2/3 for now to lose weight but I believe she could get 3/4 later. If I put her on the cavalier diet by royal canin she would have to get even less. Would she then not get enough nutrients from her diet if she had her food reduced to much? She does get some treats but in moderation.

Specialist weight management diets have been specifically formulated to provide all of the required nutrients in a less calorie dense formula to ensure all needs are met, whilst also promoting weight loss and maintaining healthy muscle mass. Simply restricting the portions of a regular food can potentially result in dietary deficiencies over time but can also lead the brain into not losing weight as the body is under-fed leading to rentention of fat reserves etc. Your vet or vet tech can help prescribe the appropriate amount to be fed in relation to exercise levels, current weight and target weight as well as advising on appropriate adjustments for treats/extras included in the diet
