Why are my 6-week-old kittens vomiting after eating too fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 13 days old | 0.77 lbs

Hello, I am fostering 3 orphan kittens (6 week old) and they are in the process of weaning. For a couple of days they have been vomiting, once a day each. The vomit appears like the food they ingested, no blood or strange color. They are lively and continue to have a healthy appetite, I am serving them KMR (Royal canin babycat) and soft canned food (Royal canin ultra soft mousse for baby kittens).Should I change their diet perhaps? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

It sounds like they may be eating too much too fast. Try feeding them the soft canned food (no dry food) in small portions more often so that they do not overload. You may have to feed them the solid food 4 times a day, in addition to maybe 2 additional times of the KMR, but you can phase out the baby cat slowly.

Poor kitties. Perhaps they did just eat too quickly. If they are not feverish and otherwise active and happy, go ahead and try adding in some canned kitten food (perhaps even a starter food) to the milk for the next feeding. Their bodies may need more solid foods now since they are at the weaning age (3-4 weeks old). Here is a website link to help you with the weaning process. http://m.petmd.com/cat/centers/kitten/nutrition/evr_ct_weaning_kittens_what_to_feed_a_kitten# Hopefully this was just an isolated incident and the kittens will return to normal. However if they continuously vomit and start to appear ill, then it's best to have them seen by your veterinarian for testing and treatment. I wish you all the luck with your kitties.
